Pendulum slip testing for Stoke-on-Trent floors.
Independent, UKAS-accredited floor slip resistance testing to BS 7976-2 — proving your floors are safe and your duty of care is covered.
One number tells you if a floor is safe.
PTV 36 or above is the UK benchmark for a low-risk floor in wet conditions. We measure it, evidence it, and report it.
What slip testing actually measures
Pendulum slip testing is the HSE’s preferred method for measuring how slippery a floor is. A calibrated pendulum swings a rubber slider across your surface — simulating a heel strike — to produce a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) in both wet and dry conditions.
It’s carried out to BS 7976-2 / BS EN 16165 and the UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) guidelines. The result is an objective, court-defensible number — not a guess — that proves whether your floor meets accepted safety thresholds.
Floors we test across the Potteries
If people walk on it and it can get wet, worn or contaminated, it should be tested. We assess single surfaces through to whole-site surveys.
Commercial kitchens & food
Restaurants, pubs, canteens and food production where grease and spills create constant slip risk.
Care homes & healthcare
Care homes, GP surgeries and hospitals where vulnerable users and wet areas raise the duty of care.
Retail & supermarkets
Shop entrances, aisles and Potteries retail parks where wet weather is walked indoors.
Leisure & pools
Gyms, leisure centres, changing rooms and swimming pool surrounds tested barefoot and shod.
Schools & public buildings
Schools, libraries and council facilities proving compliance under the Health & Safety at Work Act.
Industrial & warehousing
Factories, warehouses and vehicle workshops along the A50 and Stoke’s industrial estates.

UKAS-accredited laboratory
One of only a handful of UK labs accredited to ISO 17025 for slip resistance testing.
Court-defensible evidence
Independent BS 7976 reports accepted in insurance claims and civil litigation.
Mobile across Staffordshire
On-site testing throughout Stoke-on-Trent with minimal disruption to your operations.
Proactive, not reactive
Test before an incident to reduce liability — clients have cut slip & trip claims by up to 60%.
Slip testing across Stoke-on-Trent & beyond
We test throughout the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding Staffordshire and Cheshire area.
Stoke-on-Trent built its name on ceramics — the home of British tile. Fitting, then, that the same tiled and polished surfaces that define the Potteries are exactly what the pendulum test was made to assess. We bring that testing to your door.
Slip testing FAQs
What is pendulum slip testing?
It’s an on-site floor safety test that measures slip resistance. A calibrated pendulum swings a rubber slider across the floor to produce a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). It’s the method preferred by the HSE and is carried out to BS 7976-2 / BS EN 16165 and UKSRG guidelines.
What PTV score is considered safe?
In UK guidance, a wet PTV of 36 or above is treated as low slip risk, 25–35 is moderate, and 24 or below is high risk. We test in both wet and dry conditions and report your floor against these HSE and UKSRG thresholds.
Do you cover all of Stoke-on-Trent?
Yes. We test throughout Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Potteries — Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, Fenton and Stoke town — plus Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe and Congleton across Staffordshire and Cheshire.
How quickly do I get my report?
Reports are typically issued within 48 hours of the site visit, and we reply to every enquiry within 24 hours.
Is the test disruptive, and how long does it take?
No — each test covers roughly one square metre and takes only a few minutes once set up. The number of tests depends on how many different surfaces you want assessed; we can usually build a clear picture of a building in a handful of tests.
Are your reports accepted for HSE, insurance and court?
Yes. Surface Performance is a UKAS-accredited laboratory testing to BS 7976. Independent, accredited PTV results are recognised by the HSE and UKSRG and accepted as credible evidence in insurance and civil claims.
